The Story

The history behind the coin.

The Capitana of the 1741 Fleet, Invencible, sat in Havana harbor waiting to be loaded with gold, silver, and other treasures of the New World on June 30th, 1741 (some sources give the date as the 20th). At night, a thunderstorm was rocking the city when a single strike hit the Invencible. The following explosion blew up the ship and shattered all the windows of the surrounding buildings. According to John Potter, "salvage of her silver was surprisingly successful."

The few coins known to have come from the Invencible are primarily small-denomination Reales from the mainland Spanish mint of Seville. Only 3 coins are known from the wreck: a 1726 Real in the Sebring collection, this 1733 2 Reales, and a 1737 2 Reales in The Knapton Collection. These coins exhibit a matte-like surface with no saltwater corrosion.
