1781 Sede Vacante City-View Thaler

When a prince-bishop of the Holy Roman Empire died, his see entered a period of "Sede Vacante" - "the seat being vacant" - during which the cathedral chapter (Capitulum) governed the prince-bishopric until a new bishop could be elected. Several of the smaller ecclesiastical states marked these brief interregnums by striking commemorative thalers in the chapter's name, and Eichstätt produced one of the most spectacular examples of the entire genre in 1781, on the death of Prince-Bishop Raymund Anton von Strasoldo.

The obverse of this issue is one of the great baroque civic city-view designs of 18th-century German numismatics: a bird's-eye plan of the city of Eichstätt nestled in its Altmühl valley, with the cathedral and bishop's residence rising at the center, ranges of houses falling away in stylized perspective, the city walls and gate towers framing the composition, and the All-Seeing Eye of Providence radiating from the heavens above. The Latin legend HAEC SUB TUTELA ("This [city] under [Thy] protection") arches around the divine eye, and a small heart-shaped cartouche carries the cathedral chapter's arms.

The reverse is the classic Sede Vacante array - the central arms of the prince-bishopric framed by the heraldic shields of every member of the cathedral chapter, ringed by the legend CAPITULUM REGNANS SEDE VACANTE ("The Chapter governing while the See is vacant") and the date 1781, with the mintmaster's signature and the Reichsthaler-standard mark 10 EINE FEINE MARCK below.

NGC AU 58 is a strong sliders-of-mint-state grade for the type, with original light-grey toning, full devices, and the kind of preservation that lets every house, dormer, and gate-tower of the city plan still read clearly. Sede Vacante thalers are a uniquely German numismatic genre - struck only during a vacant ecclesiastical interregnum, by a body that ceased to govern the moment a new bishop was elected.
