The history behind the coin.
Following the Spanish-American War of 1898 and the subsequent Philippine-American War, the Philippines became an unincorporated US territory administered by the Insular Government. In 1903 the United States introduced a new coinage for the islands, designed by the Filipino artist Melecio Figueroa: a beautiful series ranging from the half centavo through the silver Peso, all carrying Filipino allegorical designs on the obverse and the heraldic eagle-on-shield of the United States on the reverse.
The obverse of the Peso depicts a young Filipina in flowing classical drapery standing before an anvil with a hammer raised in her right hand, Mount Mayon smoking in the distance behind her - an allegory of Filipino industry and aspiration under the new government. The legend ONE PESO arches above and FILIPINAS curves below. The reverse carries the American heraldic eagle perched atop the shield of the United States, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the date.
Proof Pesos of this design were struck only briefly at the Philadelphia Mint for collector sets. The Proof issue carries a published mintage of just 2,558 pieces - genuinely tiny by US Mint standards - and survivors in choice Proof condition with original color are highly sought after.
This example, certified PCGS PR-64, is exactly the kind of "in-the-cameo" piece the series is famous for: light magenta toning across the fields with reddish-orange highlights at the peripheries on the obverse, and dramatic crimson-and-teal rainbow toning over the eagle-and-shield reverse. The piece carries an excellent modern provenance, having sold in Stack's Bowers' 2022 New York International Numismatic Convention auction as lot 75458 for $1,920.
