The Story

How the coin reached the seabed.

The S.S. Pewabic was a Civil War-era freighter on Lake Huron. On August 9th, 1865, she collided with her sister ship, the S.S. Meteor, and sank - killing an estimated 117 people.

In 1917, Pewabic's cargo of copper ingots was salvaged along with the ship's safe. Fifty dollars in paper currency was recovered, but no coins. Only an estimated 10 to 20 coins are believed to have been salvaged from the Pewabic at all, as those coins were the personal property of individual passengers rather than registered cargo.

This 1859-O Seated Liberty Quarter is one of those rare survivors - certified by NGC and pedigreed to the S.S. Pewabic within The Knapton Collection.
